Measured Extravagance

28 November 2001 - 10:05 p.m.

Four things that have made me laugh:

(1) The appalled expression on the BYM's face when I started singing along to "Hard Habit to Break" during lunch at the Sutler.

(2) Naomi Chana's notes on halachah and coffee.

(3) Anya's observation during last night's installment of Buffy: "Martha Stewart isn't a demon, she's a witch... nobody could do that much decoupage without calling on the powers of darkness."

(4) Sylvia Townsend Warner's advice to William Maxwell on handling a colicky baby, which mostly advocates keeping the baby face-downwards and concludes: "[My mother] used to feel very cross with the great masters of Christian Art because none of them knew how a baby should be held, and attributed every case of dyspepsia to some ass of a young mother wanting to look like the Blessed Virgin."
